Scrabble Word Building Tips

Pro tip: The highest-scoring Scrabble play is not always the longest word. A short word landing on a Triple Word square can outscore an 8-letter word on plain squares.
  • Target premium squares: Plan your rack around reaching Double and Triple Word squares for massive point multipliers
  • Learn the 2-letter words: There are 107 valid 2-letter Scrabble words — mastering them unlocks parallel plays that score in two directions
  • Keep a balanced rack: Aim for roughly 3 consonants and 4 vowels. Dump excess vowels on short plays to improve your draw
  • Watch for bingo opportunities: Using all 7 tiles earns a 50-point bonus. Common bingo racks contain -ING, -TION, or -NESS patterns
  • Block your opponent: Avoid opening up Triple Word squares for your opponent by playing defensively near premium positions

Frequently Asked Questions

How are Scrabble points calculated?

Each letter tile has a fixed point value (E=1, Q=10, Z=10, etc.). The word score is the sum of all tile values, multiplied by any premium squares the tiles land on. Playing all 7 rack tiles in one turn adds a 50-point bingo bonus.

What does the board pattern field do?

Enter letters that are already on the game board where you want to connect your word. Use ? for empty spaces. This helps the maker find words that fit with existing tiles. Select Start, Any, End, or Exact to control where the pattern matches.

Which Scrabble dictionary does this use?

The default is the Scrabble-US dictionary (TWL/NWL). You can switch to Scrabble-UK (SOWPODS/Collins), Words With Friends, or international dictionaries in the Search Options section.

Can I use blank tiles?

Yes. Type # to represent a blank tile that can substitute for any letter. Blanks are worth 0 points but dramatically expand the number of possible words. The maker tests all 26 possible substitutions.
